Jávea (Xàbia in Valencian), on the Costa Blanca, is on the Mediterranean coast between Valencia and Alicante Spain. It is approx a one hour drive north of Alicante and it's most popular beach is the Playa del Arenal. This beach has been awarded the coveted Blue Flag and is a long wide stretch of pure white sand. There are also the beaches of Cala de La Granadella, Cala del Pope and Montanar for you to enjoy. Jávea is said to have one of the best climates in the world. It is incredibly sheltered, being positioned between two large rocky headlands. The Montgo natural park with an abundance of wildlife and archaeology, dominates Jávea; it is 758m high and covers around 2000 hectares. The Montgo mountainous ridge, known locally as 'Elephant Mountain', protects Javea from extremes of weather and produces an ideal micro climate - protecting it from harsh cold winds during the winter and ensuring that the summer heat is never too intense. The average Jávea weather reaches temperatures of up to 40°C in summer, but not less than 10°C during winter time - gentle breezes ensure that the heat is never too overbearing.
  
There are numerous shops, bars and restaurants along the Avenida del Mediterraneo which runs along Jávea harbour area and during the summer evenings there are stalls selling handmade crafts. Many of the bars have live music and are open late - there really is something for everyone in Jávea. Fish auctions are held every afternoon and you are able to buy freshly caught fish and shellfish from the fish stall as the boats unload their catches.
Jávea's old town is a mass of narrow streets with fascinating gothic architecture mainly built from original Tosca stone. The many historic sites of interest are there for those of you who prefer to do more than play golf or sunbathe; the church Iglesia de San Bartolome was built in the 12th century; the museum Soler Blasco in the calle Primicias displays a copy of the treasure of Jávea - the most beautiful ancient jewellery (the original is housed in Madrid) and there is an art gallery, Atelier 1. In the summer you may get the chance to view 'sand artists' work which is displayed along the beach. There is an indoor market of mainly food stalls which opens each day, morning and evening and every Thursday there is an outdoor market with everything from fruit to souvenirs. This is open from about 8.30 am to 1pm.
There are amazing views from the Cabo de Nao San Martin which is reached by a path from the Jávea harbour and nearby there is the cabo de Nao - a small hill with a lighthouse.
If you are lucky enough to visit during June, July or September you may visit one of the many fiestas - Fogueres de San Juan (June), Moros y Cristianos (July) and Nuestra Señora de Loreto (September). For those of you who feel adventurous there are local facilities for cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse-riding, mountain-biking, photography, sailing and trekking. Or you could try taking the glass-bottomed ferry to Calpe, an hour down the coast. |
